Do You Know Your BOS?
The Board of Supervisors holds a tremendous amount of power — let’s assert our collective political power and ensure our voices are heard!
While District 2 incumbent Richard Valle will go unchallenged, this is not the case for District 3. The late Supervisor Wilma Chan formally held this seat, which is now held by an interim office holder, Dave Brown. During her tenure as Supervisor, Wilma Chan led with progressive values, championed justice reinvestment initiatives, and was a reliable ally for community-based organizations and labor unions. Given the significant power that the Board of Supervisors has over the county, we are closely monitoring this race.
The Board of Supervisors (BOS) vote on the annual Alameda County budget, including funding for county departments such as the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney, Probation, and Behavioral Health. Importantly, the BOS has a significant impact on the conditions of Santa Rita Jail and Juvenile Hall.
About our Endorsement
EBC Action Fund’s Political Organizing Committee made a recommendation to endorse Rebecca Kaplan by a vote of 5-0. Our Political Organizing Committee is a group of members who have experienced incarceration, are currently incarcerated, or have lost a loved one to police violence. The EBC Action Fund Leadership Team, staff, and board approved the Committee’s recommendation.
At every chance, we create opportunities for those who have been impacted by systems of punishment and policing to confront, question, and support those in positions of power.
“The Alameda County Board of Supervisors is a powerful elected body in dire need of real progressive leadership. Rebecca Kaplan has a proven track record of going to bat for Black, Brown, and low-income communities. She understands the need to divest and shift away from failed county policies that solely rely on incarceration,” said Jose Bernal, Organizing Director with EBC Action Fund. “Our communities desperately need investments in health-affirming resources, such as housing, living wage jobs, and mental health resources. In addition, the county needs leadership on the Board that can exercise oversight authority to hold other elected officials accountable, like the Alameda County Sheriff. We believe Kaplan is this person. For these reasons and many more, we are proud to support Rebecca Kaplan for District 3 Supervisor.”
