The Ella Baker Center’s membership is a way for anyone, anywhere—especially those who have been harmed by the criminal legal system—to join the movement to create true safety for everyone.
We invest in EBC members by advancing their political analysis, organizing skills, and access twe o legislators and spaces where policies are determined. Ella Josephine Baker taught us that “Strong people don’t need strong leaders,” so we strive to learn and be activated by you, our members. We are committed to the work of deep democracy in the community to further our members’ ability to organize around their self-determined interests.
We are building an intersectional, community-engaged, people-powered movement to end mass criminalization and incarceration. The Ella Baker Center Membership:
- is deeply rooted in the East Bay values, though our membership expands that impact well beyond Oakland,
- focuses on building the power and leadership of incarcerated people, formerly incarcerated people, victims and survivors of law enforcement abuse, and their families,
- centers system impacted people, historically excluded Black, Brown, and low to no income people.
