Political Director; Leadership Team
Jose (he/him) serves as the Political Director at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and the Ella Baker Center Action Fund, where he provides strategic leadership in advancing issue-based and electoral campaigns. A seasoned policy advocate and grassroots organizer, Jose is a recognized Latino leader with a distinguished record of driving systemic change, cultivating political power, and uplifting the leadership of directly impacted communities across California.
As a former San Francisco Sentencing Commissioner, Jose played a central role in the county’s plan to permanently close one of its jails. His leadership has been instrumental in notable campaigns such as ending gang injunctions, initiating comprehensive audits of CA Sheriffs, immigrant rights, District Attorney accountability, and campaigns that have supported families impacted by state violence.
In addition, Jose currently serves on the Executive Committee of Oakland Rising, where he provides strategic guidance in advancing civic engagement and voter outreach initiatives within Oakland’s BIPOC communities.His enduring commitment to justice continues to guide his efforts to advance freedom, dignity, and liberation for all oppressed communities.
